Kwila (Intsia bijuga), also known as Merbau and Ipil, it’s a hardwood much grown in north western region of PNG, it is popular in India, Australia, New Zealand, China & Middle East for its durability, color and price.
The heartwood is yellowish-brown, brown or dark red, red-brown, turning to a dark red-brown with age.
